Asperger’s Syndrome: List of Characteristics and Treatments

Knowing more about the list of asperger syndrome characteristics is a great thing. Most people only know asperger’s syndrome (AS) as a type of autism. Even so, AS has different symptoms and characteristics. It is true that the main symptom of AS is the difficulty to have social interaction and non verbal communication just like the other type of a milder ASD or autism spectrum disorder. However, we cannot just think that AS is just a typical ASD. There are a lot of things that make it distinguished from the other ASD types.

Definition and causes

Before looking for more information about AS characteristics, it would be better for us to learn more about its definition. In general people know Asperger’s Syndrome as one type of milder ASD. Some people also know it as a developmental disorder in which people perform serious difficulties in social interaction especially in a non verbal communication. In most cases people with AS would show repetitive and restricted patterns of interests and behavior. Even so, AS is distinguished from the other common ASD. AS symptoms do not include the any abnormal intelligence and language condition. It means that people with AS actually has normal intelligence and language capability.

Although there is no significant studies that show the effect of AS to physical performance. It has been found that AS also causes physical clumsiness along with uncommon use of language to communicate. According to the research that is conducted by World Health Organization, both the physical clumsiness and the language use are actually the effect of certain psychological condition that begin before a person reach two years old.

The reason why a person suffers from AS has not yet been found. Scientists are still working under researches to study the exact cause of AS. The current finding shows that the one of the main cause of AS is the genetic factor. Although this cause has not yet been reached a clear conclusion, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder (DSM 5) found that most children get AS from their parents. Of course there are some other factors, such as the environment factors that are believed to cause AS. Since the exact cause of AS has not been yet found, it is still difficult to suggest the exact treatments to cure AS. In most cases multiple therapies would be conducted to treat AS symptoms.

Asperger’s Syndrome characteristics

Each person with AS actually may show different symptoms that lead to different characteristics of AS. However, still there are some common behavior that leads to AS. Each individual may suffer more than one behavior. In general, there is list of asperger syndrome characteristics that covers:

  1. Some marked weaknesses in nonverbal behavior that include facial expression, gesture, body posture, and eye gaze.
  2. Difficult to develop peer relationships with people in the same age. Generally, AS children feel much more comfortable to stay around adults than around other children.
  3. Extreme strict adherence to their routines.
  4. Highly interested in globes, routes, and maps with superior rote memory.
  5. Being too focus on particular object and neglect the other things and people.
  6. Difficult to judge personal space and poor motoric skill.
  7. Extremely high sensitivity to loud noises, food texture, odors, clothing, and particular environment.
  8. Poor language skills in almost all linguistic area especially pragmatics, prosody, and semantics. Some children even show the characteristics of a “little professor” in which they speak in formal language, verbose, and tend to think like adults with extensive vocabulary at the very early age.
  9. Impairment capability to understand other people’s feeling and read social cues.
  10. Inappropriate social and emotional responses.

Asperger’s Syndrome treatments

There is no single treatment to deal with AS. In general, children with AS should get some therapies and medication that are supported by the environment. The therapies would address the symptoms. Most professionals believe that the earlier a children get the right therapies, the lesser symptoms appear in their adult life. In general, the therapies includes several things:

  • A procedure to support positive behavior that includes some training for the parents. To support this procedure, it would be suggested for parents to choose an elementary school that is aware of AS.
  • An ABA procedure. It is an applied behavior analysis to help the children perform effective interaction to people in their age.
  • Cognitive behavior-base therapy to teach stress and anxiety management.
  • Communication therapy to help the children with pragmatics and speaking ability.

At the same time, some children with AS also need to take medical therapy. The medication can be very different from one child to the other. It all depends on the children conditions and the AS symptoms. In some cases, the children with AS also need to take other medication due to their physical health or to minimize the side effects of the AS medical treatments. In general, the doctor will give the children the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) such as fluvoxamine, sertaline, and fluoxetine. These medications would help children with AS to control their nerve that play a role in anxiety, anger, and panic. In some cases, children with AS may also need to get some sleep therapy or medication to make them relax at night. Although the medication shows a great effect to the AS, it also affects the children health. The most common side effect is that the medication increases the chance of the children to get diabetes type 2. Some psychiatrists prescribe the other medicine to lower the negative effects of the medications. In most cases, the medication must be in corporate with the psychological and physical therapies. Just like the other common types of autism medications, AS medication in some degree also requires particular diet and lifestyle. Therefore, medication is listed to be a support therapy that is given only when it is needed. In addition, medication will not only deal with one of two symptoms from the list of asperger syndrome characteristics.
