Different types of autism spectrum disorders has been revealed and found few years ago. The most interesting thing, most of people see it wrongly. They think that autism is only one type, the common autism case, which is actually known as autistic disorder. However, it is actually one of the disorders in Autism Spectrum Disorders group. This group itself has 4 different type of disorder.
This type is what most people known as autism. It’s related to many autism cases that happen on various age ranges, from child autism to Kenner’s syndrome. Before 2013, this disorder hasn’t been including into Autism Spectrum Disorder. However, in the fifth edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the researchers finally decide and include it into autism spectrum disorder group.
For the definition of the autism disorder that you can find in this group, 10th edition of International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems that was published in 2010 explain it very clearly. This autism is a condition where there is some pervasive developmental disorder that can be seen by some symptoms, such as:
Abnormal development that can be found before the children reach 3 years old
There is abnormal development in three areas of psychopathology, which are:
Other symptoms that usually can be found on children that have this disorder are phobias, sleeping and eating disorder, aggression toward themselves and temper tantrums.
This is one of unique autism disorder, because person that was diagnosed with this disorder will have high intelligence than normal people. Previously, this disorder is also classified as different type of disorder. And, through the same Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 2013, this disorder finally placed into autism spectrum disorder.
According to 10th International Classification of Disease and Related Health Problems 2010, Asperger Syndrome is an uncertain nosological validity disorder. The symptoms of Asperger are practically similar to the autism. For example, the patient will have problem with reciprocal social interaction, which can be found on many autism case. They also only have interest on stereotype and repetitive activities. However, the one that makes this disorder different than autism is the patient doesn’t have any problem in their language or cognitive development. Instead, they are excelling in this area. Therefore, many people that has Asperger often state has clumsy characteristic. This syndrome also occurs a lot on adult. There are even many cases where there syndrome start to detected when someone reach adult age.
We can see if our children have this disorder by consulting it with doctor. However, there are also easy sign that you can see on person who has this disorder, such as:
Difficulty in making friend with other that has same age. Mostly, the patient of Asperger Syndrome is more comfortable to communicate with someone younger or older than him or her.
They also like to talk and tend to ignore other people who are listening to them.
They also tend to make unnecessary or weird movement or gesture when talking with other people. You can see it from how they see other people that they talk to and how they move their hand or legs when talking or do nothing.
Childhood Disintegrative Disorder
Childhood Disintegrative Disorder or it’s known as CDD, is one of the rarest forms of autism. It’s totally different on its earlier stages compared to autism. A child that has CDD usually has normal development on all areas until they reach age of 2 years old. From that age, the disintegration is starting. Children will lose many of their skill and ability that they got before. And, it can become even worst by losing their ability to talk and walk.
This disorder also just included into Autism Spectrum Disorder in 2013 by the same release on Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. For the description, according to International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Asperger Syndrome is a pervasive development disorder that is started by normal development in certain areas of children, and then when it reaches some age, children will loss those developments. The losing process takes about few months and it’s not only ability that they will lose. The interest to surrounding, along with the similar symptoms of autism also can be found on the children with CDD. There are also some cases that shown that CDD is also affected by the encephalopathy. However, to decide that this is the cause of this disorder, a behavioral diagnose is needed.
To treat the children that have this disorder, there are some methods or treatments that can be used, which are:
Behavior Therapy, this is needed because children lose most of their ability in the area that affect their behavior. There is program called Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) that you can use to treat your children.
Environmental Therapy, this is the common treatment for autism
Pervasive Developmental Disorder (Not Otherwise Specified)
This is also one of autism form, which known as PDD (NOS). Like its name, this disorder is used to classify the autism disorder that can’t be classified into three previous types, autistic disorder, Asperger Syndrome and CDD. PDD (NOS) is also included in this group in 2013 on similar health journal. And, according to International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, PDD (NOS) can be decrypted as a pervasive developmental disorder that has different form and symptoms than the three types in Autism Spectrum Disorder type. The diagnosing for PDD (NOS) can only be used when doctor find there are some disorder after 3 years old. The other condition is those disorder can’t be classified fully into the symptoms of those three autism type before. For example, if there is only disorder in less than three areas of psychopathology, where those three has disorder in each those areas, so, doctor can classified it as PDD (NOS) or other different types of autism spectrum disorders.
