Obviously, no parents want their children to face this particular condition since obesity directs people to many kinds of diseases such as diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, heart attack and so forth. Generally, obesity is known as a condition when someone has too many body fats. In this case, usually your weight is even higher than your proportional weight or your healthy weight. Nevertheless, you must remember that not all children have the tendency of getting some weight or being obese. Some children do have larger average body than others. Normally, each child will carry different body fat at every stage of their development. So, perhaps don’t be too quick to judge.

What are the Causes of Childhood Obesity?

Basically, when it comes to what causes childhood obesity, many people will blame the eating habits or unhealthy foods. In fact, it is true that having healthy behaviors will reduce the risk of getting obese. However, there are around 8 factors that can affect children’s weight and eventually lead them to obesity. The first is of course the foods. The amount of unhealthy foods that are consumed by children is just over the top. Children who have poor diets and consume a lot of fast food, candy, snacks, drink soda, eat chips, and baked goods are most likely get obesity. These unhealthy foods contain high calories. The second is the lack of physical activity. Believe it or not, some parents just let their children to spend more times in front of the computer or TV simply because they do not want their children to have outdoor activities. However, children with ignorant parents have more calories and most likely gain a lot of weight. So, if you are too afraid of letting your children go outside alone, perhaps it is better for you to prepare some physical activities like games that you can do together with them. This way, you can watch over your children outside and let them get more exercises. Third, you must upgrade your environment. How? Change the foods you have in your fridge like snacks, chips, microwave pizza, or candy with healthy snacks such as fresh fruits, yogurt, and even high fiber granola bars. Fourth, perhaps your children have psychological issues that are caused by their parents divorced, family’s death, peer pressure, teachers, and many more. They will suffer stress, boredom, or probably anxiety. These conditions may lead them to consume more foods. Fifth is one of the most common causes, which is genetics. So, if a child has overweight parents he or she will have higher possibility to get obese. Sixth, similar to the genetic condition, children with medical condition like hypothyroidism, Prader Willi, and Cushing syndromes also have higher risk to develop obesity. Seventh is the socioeconomic condition of the child. Usually, children from low income family will have more risks to get obesity. This condition is also contributes to what causes childhood obesity. Additionally, it happens because the parents do not have enough time and money to prepare and to purchase healthy foods. Fast foods are usually cheaper and faster. These children may not be able to get enough physical activities either due to their poor and dangerous communities and environments. The eighth factor, which is the last, is sleep. It is recommended by researchers that children must sleep around 13 hours per day. Children who get less sleep usually end up getting obesity at the age of 7. As parents, you must be aware that fatigue will lead your children to feel hungry all the time.

Overall, what causes childhood obesity are poor diets, lack of physical activities, genetics, and medical condition. To find out about your children’s weight, you should bring them to the doctor or nutritionist to have some tests like physical test or blood test. For those reasons, the best treatments to prevent or to overcome obesity in children are having healthy menu and getting more physical activity.
