Obesity Statistics in America: Facts, Factors, and Trends

The number of obesity statistics in America alone is terrifying already. Report mentioned the number tends to increase from year to year, and this means the entire solution given is not yet working out. This number can lead to serious mass health problems, and we should do our best to prevent it. Before going too far, let’s take a look at the fact first.

 Obesity in Adult

The number of obesity statistics in America especially among adults, 20 years and older, makes the most terrifying facts so far. Here are several facts we must be aware about according to the latest survey done by National Health and Nutrition Examination survey in 2009-2010.

  • Among 3 adults, more than two of them are classified as overweight or obese.

  • Among 3 adults, more than one of them are classified as obese.

  • Among 20 adults, more than one of them are classified as extreme obesity.

Those facts are not the worst part yet. Later, in 2011 and 2012, around 34.9% of adults in US are classified as obese. This is more than a third of them. Around 68.6% of them are classified, and this is more than two third of them.

The number of obesity statistics in America also proves that people around 40 to 59 tend to have obese problem, more than people around 20 to 39 or 60 and over. According to the data, 39.5% of people around 45 to 59 are obese. Meanwhile, only 30.3% of people around 20 to 39 are obese, and only 35.4% of people around 60 and over are obese. On top of that, around 6% of US adults are severe obese, which is a terrifying fact.

Obesity in Children

This topic is also crucial among children. Surprisingly, the number of obesity statistics in America among children is as threatening and terrifying as in adults. Here are the facts we need to know about it:

  • Among children and teenagers around two to 19 years old, 17% of them are classified as obese and 31.8% of them are even classified as overweight or obese. It means they don’t change the situation but it gets worse.

  • More than one out of twelve children, or around 8.4%, are already classified as obese since early childhood. Children with this situation have higher risk to never recover from the situation.

  • Among kids around 12 to 19 years old, 20.5% of them are definitely obese.

  • There are children who are classified as severely obese as well, including 2% of young children, 5% of those around six to 11, and 6.5% of those around 12 to 19.

It is widely known that children with obese and overweight problems tend to develop the situation in a bad way, in which they will grow up as people with the same problem. Those facts underline the importance of lifestyle change even on children to prevent even worse obese problems. This effort should be fully supported and initiated by the parents though.

Based on Socioeconomic Status

According to CDC National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), obesity statistics in America is also closely related to socioeconomic status. Before we think about it further, let’s check out the following facts that can’t be denied:

  • People with better income tend to have obesity problems than those who have lower income. This happens to Mexican-American people, and non Hispanic black society. This is a little contradictive comparing to the general trend in which people with lower income tends to develop this problem more.

  • Women with lower income also tend to develop the obesity comparing to women with higher income. This is no longer a surprise since higher income lets them maintain healthier lifestyle.

  • Among men, education degree doesn’t affect their tendency to develop obesity problem. In contrary, women have different condition. Women who are at least graduated from college have lower tendency to develop obesity problem comparing to those with lower education level.

It is a common knowledge that people with better socioeconomic situation have the ability to maintain healthier lifestyle and prevent obesity problem. They also have better chance to improve their obesity problem if they have any. People with lower income tend to live spontaneously and they have less care on their intakes. Women on the other way, due to their psychological problems, tend to develop higher risk than men. Beside socioeconomic status, sex also affects number on obesity statistics in America.

Obesity based on Ethnicity and Race

Ethnicity and race make other factors to consider when it comes to obesity issue. According to the result of survey conducted by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in 2015, these two factors are highly affecting. Here are the facts on obesity statistics in America:

  • Among white people, the obesity rate achieved 24.2 % in 2008, and it was elevated around +2.8 ptc. pts. to 27% in 2015. According to National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in 2009-2010, around 66.7% or two out of three white people in US had obesity problem.

  • Among Hispanics, obesity rate achieved 27.4% in 2008, and it was elevated +1.2 ptc. pts. to 28.6% in 2015. According to NHANES in 2009-2010, 78.8% or three out of four Hispanics had obesity problem.

  • Among Asians, the obesity rate reached 8.6% in 2008, and it was elevated +1.2 ptc. pts. to 9.8% in 2015. According to NHANES in 2009-2010, around 11.6% of Asian American had obesity problem.

  • Among blacks, obesity rate reached 35.1% in 2008, and it was elevated +0.5 ptc. pts. to 35.6% in 2015. According to NHANES in 2009-2010, around 49.5% of blacks had obesity problem, and 13.1% or one out of ten blacks had severe obesity problem.

Explanation above shows how an effective change of lifestyle is needed in US. The number is getting bigger, and people seem to see it as nothing serious at all. Obesity leads to health crisis, not to mention the ugly look those people are actually suffering from. People need to see themselves on the number of obesity statistics in America, and see what they can do for their own selves.
