What is childhood obesity? Based on the data in WHO, the number of the obese in children increases two times since 1980. More than 1.4 billion of teenagers aged 20 years old have excessive weight, and more than 40 million children under 5 are overweight. Even though overweight can be prevented since childhood, what is childhood obesity?  Obesity is the accumulation of the excessive fat that can damage someone’s health. The excessive fat can be the fat since the childhood. The Body Mass Index (BMI) becomes the simplest index to calculate the height and the weight that can classify whether the person is in normal weight or overweight. It can be said over weight if the BMI is ≥ 30.

The fact about childhood obesity

Based on the fact by WHO, obesity is the highest cause of global death. More than 3.4 million of young people die annually because of this thing. The impact of the obesity is various such as heart attack, diabetes, and 7-41% people with obesity have the risk in cancer. The other fact said that in 2012, more than 40 million of children in the world with age under 5 are suffering obesity. And it is wondering that the biggest disease suffers in the big country with high income. More than 30 million of children with obesity lived in the developed country.

The disease that can be caused by the obesity are various, adults, teenagers, or even children with obesity have the higher risk in diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and the other diseases. Those diseases are considered as the adult or old people disease. But now, even children can have the fat, cholesterol, and excessive sugar in the body. The respiratory disorder and asthma can be experienced by the children with obesity. In addition, children with obesity are difficult to move, so the growth will not be maximum because of the excessive fat in the organ of the body can develop well. More than that, children with obesity will also experience the taunts from the parents and people surround them.

The cause of childhood obesity

There are some of the causes of the obesity to the children. One of them is the genetic factors. Obesity may be happened in someone childhood because he inherited it from the parents. This caused can’t be avoided. When the mother or the father is overweight, usually the children will be overweight too. Fast food and unhealthy snacks is the other causes. In this modern era, the fast-food restaurants grow rapidly. Most of the children love fast food because no wonder that fast food is delicious. And most of the parents today give the fast food in many cases; with the excuse that fast food is fast in serving, simple, and delicious. As the fact, there’s no good nutrition in fast food. All of the fast food is rich of fat and sugar that can cause terrible obesity. It is real that fast food taste well, but there is no nutrition at all especially for the development and the growth of the children. Besides fast food, snack in package is also rich of sodium and sugar which is not good at all for the children. Soft drink like the carbonate drink actually is including of fast food. it is proved that this beverage has lots of sugar in one portion. Even the taste is good and fresh, but it is better not to give the children soft drink or other beverage in package. Instead of fast food and soft drink, lack of physical activities can cause obesity to the children. Childhood is the best moment for playing time. The children play time is physical games such as running, jumping, and many more. But in modern era, the physical activities are replaced with the games on gadget. Computer, gadget, television plays to role in making the children today lack of physical activity, therefore it can cause obesity to many children in the world.

The childhood obesity solution

For parents who have children who are overweight, it is better not to impose the strict diet because it can interfere with the growth and health. But there are some steps to prevent the obesity in childhood. the first step is paying attention to the food that will be given to children. Reduce the consumption of fast food or snack foods in containers, soft drinks, sweet snacks or food with a high fat content. Instead, serve meat and fresh vegetables. And don’t forget to increase the consumption of fruits and milk that good for the growth of the children. Provide the appropriate portion and not too excessive.  The next step is by providing the breakfast and lunch for children. The breakfast is a good start for children during the day. It is a must so that children can be strong during the activities in schools and prevent overeating later. By bringing food from home, parents can control children’s nutrition and avoid that children do not need to buy snacks outside. The other step is by fixing the techniques in processing the food. Do not fry food because there will be many fat will be consumed. You can try processing the food by steaming, boiling or grilling the food to healthier. Set the rules in eating. Just keep the children familiar with the dining table instead of eating in front of the television or computer. Many people will not realize how much food has been eaten if they ate while enjoying the television or at the computer. Don’t forget to give limit the activities in watching television, video games or use the computer. These activities is actually the main reason of how and what is childhood obesity can be happened.  Doing these activities will make your children lazy to move. It requires the strict rules about how long these activities may be carried out. Furthermore, you can help your children in order to enjoy the other entertainment such as biking, playing ball or a jumping rope. Do activities that require to the physical activity. Parents and the children can plan to conduct joint sports activities such as jogging, swimming, playing badminton or any other sport. The other alternatives is planning the holiday together on the beach, the zoo or the park so that the children have a lot of time for walking and do the outside activities. Directly it can burn the fat in the body.
